Prospect Profile: Lance Stephenson
We continue our series with a profile of Cincinnati shooting guard Lance Stephenson.
Lance Stephenson has been hyped as the next big New York City guard for the past few years. One scintillating season at Cincinnati only solidified his standing as a legit NBA player.
The Big East’s Freshman of the Year averaged 12.3 points, 5.4 boards and 2.4 assists in his lone collegiate season. Stephenson started all but two games for the Bearcats, and made a statement right from the start by leading Cincinnati to a win over no. 10 UConn with 21 points in his Big East debut, draining the game winning free throw with 0.7 seconds left to play. His best game came against No. 20 Georgetown when he scored 23 points and connected on 11 of 17 shots.
The Brooklyn born Stephenson is a 6-foot-5, 210-pound slashing guard who is a tough, physical presence at just 19 years of age. While his three-ball is a tad inconsistent, he is a powerful finisher who can score at will around the basket. He also boasts one of the best mid-range games of all players eligible in this year’s draft despite boasting sub-par athleticism at this stage of his development.
Expectations were high for Stephenson entering his freshman year after averaging 28.9 points, 10.2 boards and 3.9 dimes at Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn. But after rising to the occasion for the Bearcats, few doubt he can have a similar impact in the NBA.
